New Little Zuri | Frederick, MD Newborn Photographer

Zuri was a very special newborn session for me. Typically, newborn sessions are best within a little one’s first two weeks, but Zuri had already hit the 6 week mark! She was a month premature, so it was as if she were the size of a two week old. I could not believe how sweet she was and she slept like a champ!
Newborn sessions are so different from all other sessions. Most of the time, as a photographer, you are jumping around, being flashy and funny, running around after little ones and making everyone laugh. Newborn sessions are quiet and warm and I keep very clam and serene. I have a feeling they can tell when you are stressed or feeling rushed. I think back to when my mother-in-law could rock my son to sleep in a matter of minutes and hold him for an hour while he napped. Grandmothers don’t need to be anywhere else, she didn’t feel the want to put him down to shower or eat a meal or take a nap like most new parents do. I find that I don’t just need to prepare my studio with 80 degree temperatures, white noise machines and heaters that warm blankets, I make sure to prepare myself, find my center, do a few yoga poses, get into that calm and restful place. I really love the vibe during newborn sessions. I like to let the parents relax. They can just sit and sip some hot coffee, close their eyes or catch up on writing out their thank you notes from the baby shower.
I really like being in the newborn ‘zone’. It reminds me of the zone I get in when I’m painting or drawing. A part of my brain takes over and everything else fades out. It’s all just about making art.

It really paid off with this sweet little one because I just adore how her gallery came out.

Baby wrinkles… sigh!

Milk bubbles! Be still my heart.
A sweet smile!
10 beautiful little fingers and 10 tiny toes. Sometimes the little details make the most magical photos.

I definitely need more newborn sessions in my life! I do have a really fun session coming up soon and I can’t wait to share it with you guys. I’ve got so many big plans for emiB. This is going to be one busy bee!

Music: I just made a Disney play list this weekend. Yup, you read that right. Disney. Mulan, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Little Mermaid, all the greats. I’ve really loved singing along.

Coffee: It’s frappuccino weather! The caramel ribbon crunch frap is really sweet, but very yummy. I plan to try the mocha cookie crumble next time.

Jo becomes a Mrs! | Outer Banks, NC Photographer

I give major props to wedding photographers, especially ones who work alone. You have to be in a million places at once, dealing with tons of different lighting situations, once in a life time moments that you must get on the first shot and thousands of photos to look through. I tip my hat to you folks. It’s quite a job. However, I absolutely love a good wedding and I can never pass up a chance to appreciate the little details and precious moments.
You all remember the lovely Jo Beth and Landon?
Well I had the absolute honor of capturing some fantastic moments of Jo getting ready for her BIG day.
Wow. Jo’s eyes + Coffee mug + engagement ring= my favorite combo
Most importantly, updating facebook “WE ARE GETTING MARRIED FOR REAL!”  I love it.
How amazing are these flowers? Made out of sheet music. They are the coolest people ever.
 The fabulous ‘shoe shot’!
Some of her maids getting ready!
Watch out! Even with a little hairspray to the ear, Jo Beth is all smiles! She’s so cute.
 Gorgeous
Her mom is the cutest thing in the world and she looked amazing!
Her dad’s first glance at his little girl all ready to say “I do.”
It made Jo get a little teary. <3
A few hours later, my husband, son and I were lucky enough to be invited to their wedding. It was so perfect and so Jo Beth and Landon. I’m not gonna lie, I got a little teary. I mean, I knew them before they were even together and now look at them! Love is truly amazing and so brilliantly beautiful. I’m such a hopeless romantic, so weddings are really special to me. I had some time before the Mr. and Mrs. arrived at the reception, so I took my camera and captured a few details.
A DIY cupcake station. And guys, they were delicious. This one on the right was the one I made.

“May the fourth brew with you!”

Not only are they super cute for tying in their adorable nerdy-ness and love for coffee into their favors, but they even used one of their engagement pictures from their session with yours truly!

One of the bridesmaid’s beautiful handmade bouquets.

Sigh– don’t you just love a good wedding? I had a blast and I loved stepping into a wedding photographer’s shoes, but I’m glad it was just for fun. I’ll stick to portraits for the most part.
Thank goodness it’s getting warmer out!  I can’t wait to get outside and shoot some fun summer golden hour sessions.

Coffee: I have a few free birthday treats from different places, but I’m probably most excited about my free Starbucks drink! I think I’ll go for an iced hazelnut macchiato. Yum!

Music: Michael Buble’s new album came out! I love his latest single “It’s a Beautiful Day” and I’m also really into Gavin DeGraw’s “Soldier”. Lot’s of feel good music for spring with the windows open and the birds chirping. Definitely my favorite season.

Leave some love! <3

Grayson Turns O-N-E! | Frederick, MD Photographer

I have had the absolute pleasure of watching Grayson grow from the very start.
Anyone remember this one?

A fave of mine, even if it was one of my very first shots.

Last week we smashed a little cake on his birthday and it was an absolute blast. It’s pretty adorable watching him and his cousin (my son, Jesse) play around and grow up together. They are only 5 months apart, but you would never know it from looking at them (Grayson is a good two inches taller!). For being cousins, it’s funny how different they are, especially when it comes to comparing cake smashes. My sweet Jesse is so tidy and neat. He doesn’t like to get dirty or messy at all – he’s basically never needed a bib in his whole life. So when it came time to demolish his teeny tiny cupcake (just a cupcake!), he was not having any of it. In fact, at one point, his Grandma took some icing and spread it on his chest and belly, Jesse got very mad and hollered! I was laughing my butt off the whole time, which is mostly why I don’t have a ton of pictures to show for it.
Grayson on the other hand… well, let’s just say, that cake didn’t stand a chance!

Reading us a poem from one of his favorites: Where The Sidewalk Ends
Look at these lips! Are ya kidding me kid?
This one totally pulls at my heart strings. He was a little nervous about the cake at first (note the tear), but once I popped a little frosting in his mouth he started warming up to it.

Haha yes.
Even the balloon couldn’t escape Grayson’s frosty fingers.

Happy Birthday Grayson!
I’m so very happy it’s finally feeling spring-y out! Anyone else? There was a really awesome field right by where Grayson’s birthday was last weekend. And if it wasn’t so windy I would have forced everyone into a family session right then! But maybe I can set up some family minis sometime over the summer? Here’s a sneak peek:
Just a dandelion, but look at the detail! Don’t they always talk about the little things? And there are a bunch of wild flowers in the background that will be awesome to frolic in during the golden hour.
Music: Ok so I’ve been listening back and fourth between my usual play list (Jesse’s Dance Mix) with the radio hits (my favorites are “Kiss Me”- Ed Sheeran and “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark”- Fall Out Boy) and my Throwback Pop list with all the great songs from my middle and high school days that I still love to listen to. Find me on Spotify to jam along with me while I’m editing!
Coffee: Well ok so it’s not coffee, but it is caffeine! I finally found my chai Vue cups for my Keurig Vue! And I’ve been having them iced on the warmer days (like today). So. Good.
Hopefully it won’t be another two months before I blog again!
Leave some love <3

L is for Laughter | Frederick, MD Photographer

So I got to do something when I started editing this session, and it may seem small, but it’s kind of big. I got to put all of my old sessions in a folder called “2012” and make a new folder called “2013”. Haha, it seems pretty insignificant to most people, but it’s a pretty big deal.

The title of this post is dedicated to Landon and Lukas! The sweet little guys I had the pleasure of hanging out with on Sunday.

Landon had me cracking up with his model poses and serious smirks.

This one makes my heart melt. Look at those chocolaty eyes.

Doesn’t this one look like it should be a READ poster in the library? He told some great stories!

This. Is baby Lukas. 3 months old (still had the intoxicating baby smell), and just as big of a camera ham as his brother.

It’s those serious moments they give you that make me think of that Jason Mraz song I Won’t Give Up with the line “How old is your soul?”.

Watch out ladies! He reminds me of a little Justin Bieber in this shot.

Baby Lukas needed a nap and I was happy to help… and then take pictures like crazy.

So sweet. I chuckled when Lukas was sleeping the whole time Landon was crawling all around him, I wish I could sleep like that!

It’s been a little slow at emiB for the past few weeks, since my computer suffered from serious amnesia and needed to be completely wiped and rebuilt from scratch. On top of that! My son tossed my phone in the washing machine the other day (that’s what I get for trying to teach him how to help out with laundry). So now I have a brand new computer and phone, which sounds nice, but they both just seem to look at me with their blank, empty stares where they once were filled with my pictures, documents, conversations, information and personality wrapped up into a tiny device I had no idea I relied so much on. I’m slowly adding everything and getting back into the groove of posting and updating things again. I actually re-designed my business cards the other night and I LOVE them. I might post a sneak peek of the design on instagram later (JessesGirl14 if you want to follow me!).
It felt really good to get back into editing things again. I got a little photoshop withdrawal for a minute there.

Music: I’m really into Dia Frampton (from The Voice) and Imagine Dragons are pretty great too.
Coffee: Between chasing after my little guy and trying to get work done, I’m usually drinking a cold version of whatever I was tiredly making when I woke up.

res·o·lu·tion

This year has been the most rewarding, difficult, amazing, life changing year for me.
Personally, I’ve raised a tiny wrinkled baby into a sweet little boy. Jesse and I have faced and defeated many obstacles together and I’m so very proud to wear the Mom badge with honor. My family decided to pick up our simple life on the beach to rejoin the busy, constantly changing city where we were raised. It’s been a very time consuming and challenging move, but we will only be making more progress taking deep roots and building a firm foundation for life together as a family.
And then there’s professionally. One late night in January, as we were first humouring the idea of moving, we were planning out what we would do once we moved. With help of my very supportive husband, I decided to take something that I loved and turn it into something I could be. Instead of picking up books in the store and sighing over those gorgeous squishy newborn photos, I was capturing them myself! This year, emiB Photography went from an idea and a dream to full blown reality.
As much progress as I’ve made this year, I’m just getting started. I have a dream of reaching the top of a mountain and I’ve only just packed my bags. I stand at the bottom looking up, not sure where to take my next step, my eyes always at the peak.

I can’t wait to see what this year will bring, because I know where this past year has brought me, and I like the view.

I want to thank every single person who has supported and encouraged me. I truly love to say that I love what I do. As a mother and a photographer I am excited to wake up everyday to new and exciting things.

res·o·lu·tion; n: A firm decision to do or not do something.

This year, I firmly decide to make the conscious decision every day to be physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy and to never stop trying to be amazing.

Thank you for a wonderful year. Let this new year kick some serious butt.
